Mulled wine is one of my favourite Christmas drinks . It’s hot, spiced, and irresistibly festive.  Fortunately, no matter where you live, spiced wine is incredibly simple to make in your own kitchen. And the best part is you don’t even have to buy any kind of expensive Red Wine. You can just go in for something very reasonable as it is the spices that do the magic.

This Spiced Wine will fill your home with the welcoming scent of citrus and warm spices. It’s is one of the most simple, warming, and satisfying drink you can make. So, if you are a newbie to mulled wine try this super simple recipe and let me know how you liked it.

A combination of red wine with orange and lemon peel along with some spices, honey and brandy.

Ingredients

  • 750 ml red wine (dry preferably)

  • 1 cup brandy (optional)

  • 1 stick cinnamon

  • 4 cloves

  • 1 star anise

  • generous pinch of nutmeg powder

  • 3-4 tbsp honey/maple syrup

  • few segments of mandarin orange peel

  • few segments of lemon peel

  • 100ml mandarin orange juice (juice from 1 orange)

Directions

  • Into a pan add in 250ml of red wine and add in the honey, clove, nutmeg powder, cinnamon stick, orange peel, lemon peel, star anise and orange juice( from the peeled orange).
  • Cook the mulled wine on medium to high heat until it boils. Then reduce the heat and let the wine cook on low heat till it becomes thick and syrupy. This takes about 20 minutes or so.
  • Now add in the remaining wine and the brandy, give it a mix and heat it enough just for one boil, as you don’t want to boil off the alcohol.
  • You can now strain the wine (check and add more sweetener if desired, depending on the sweetness of the wine) and serve it warm topped with your favourite garnish.

Notes

  • You do not need canned orange juice. You can use the juice from the orange that was peeled for the recipe.
  • If you are not a brandy person or you don’t want to buy one you can skip adding brandy.
  • Mulled wine can be cooled to room temperature and stored in air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • You can add any kind of sweetener of your choice.
